Poo Two/Oh, Hello Paraguay!

Friday 28/05:
At the puma me and mirta (?) washed the floor of the avery and it was DISGUSTING i actually was given a scraper to scrape poo on the floor haha. it took a couple of hours and a whole lot of agua to make it remotley clean and theres still pooey stains on the floor :/ but it smells less. i squidged the floor toget all the water out after and then came home after id finished and me and susie q went to Asuncion the capital of PARAGUAY. :)
we got the bus to encarnacion and got off at the bus station where this random man was selling tickets to asuncion :) so we bought our ticket and hopped on our bus and after six and a half hours eventually arrived at the bus station at asuncion and got a taxi to our hostel. Susie had looked up loads of stuff for us to do while id been at the puma so we checked in and went straight out for dinner to the Britannia Pub. it was the COOLEST bar ever, mainly because it was based on london lol there were london posters english music and a union jack bench, beatles posters etc.etc. it was AWESOME. when susie was buying drinks (you have to be 20 to drink in paraguay, naughty me) this old lady started talking to me asking where im from/ why im here/ how long in paraguay for etc. after i told her she basically told me her life story about how her husband died five years ago and her daughters who where there had moved in with her after that and her ex boyfriend from three years ago was half english and she really wants to visit and she uruguayan but prefers paraguay so moved here and she likes to play cards and after all that her children looked at me as if to say sorry, our mums really embarasing, but i didnt mind she was cute!! me and susie played cards and hung out until we got tired and walked back to the hostel.
We were sharing a room with this guy who i think is around 40 and from Singapore. he is the LOUDEST and most ANNOYING snorer i have everrr come across and it was RIDICULOUS .
i thought he was actually dying he makes this weird squeaky sound like he cant breathe and then makes a popping noise :/ it went on allllllll night and i barely slept a wink and in the morning suse said she didnt hear it at all!!

Saturday 29/05:
We got up around nine and went for a walk, our hostel was in the middle of the historical centre and it was a really nice area :) we went to the first train station ever in south america which was quite intersting and then we walked to the main square and looked around the markets and i bought souvenirs and then we went to this awesome cafe for lunch which just had a massive bar and all the workers and the food in the middle of the bar and i ate paraguayan soup which is AMAZING and an empanada. and then we went into this place pantheon of heroes where they have the bodies of loads of important policatical people and loads of plaques and stuff. and in the square they were having some massive christian party with stalls and singing and we watched that for a bit and then went down to the riverside and on the way we bought UNO :) and we found a place where we could take a little boat trip and we paid 50,000 guarani and got into this tiny boat called Brilliant 2. and it was BRILLIANT i didnt stop smiling the whole time, it was just a little half hour boat trip in a little circle but the boat was so cute and the captain was really funny.
then we got out and walked past the presidents house and and there were a couple of men with machine guns outside :O and we tried to find a cafe to sit in and play cards but FAILED so we got a taxi to the other trendy area of the city which took a lot of effort coz we didnt understand the driver and he didnt understand us! got there eventually and walked around the mall and sat in a sweet little cafe and had coffee and cake and played uno and then we decided to walk some fo the way back to the hostel which is alot further away than we thought and we walked down this big long road for AGES until we decided to get a bus which we were very proud of ourselves for and we got off and went back to the hostel to shower and change and we went out to this cafe thats in the lonely planet book called cafe de literatura and its WELL CUTE you just go in and sit and read a book and drink coffee. me and suse got cheese fondu and wine and sausages and it was t-a-s-t-y and we got extra pan (bread) and then we got la cuenta and went in search of Pirata Bar (Pirate Bar) which involved another confusing conversation with a taxi driver :
Me: Pirata Bar?
Him: ummm... que?
Me: P-I-R-A-T-A B-A-R
Him: No Entiendo
His Friend: Que Calle?
Me: Juan something
His Friend: Ahhhhh Pirata bar?
Me: YES
Him: ahhhhh you should have said
Me: :/

Got there after a while and we got in and got some drinks. we had to pay at one end of the bar and get the drink at the other end so we ordered vodka and cokes and htey pured the vodka to fill about half the glass and then showed us a rum bottle and looked atus like really? so i said yeah? in a confused manner and she pretty much filled my glass up with rum and susie said no we ordered vodka and coke and they said ohhhhh so literally only could fit like a centimetre of coke in and it was DISGUSTING the most gross drink ive ever had apart from this skanky vodka i had once in the bad karaoke bar. we then sat and drank and played uno because we were bored and it wasnt as good as i was expecting, the only piratey thing about it was the name, but nevermind it was still fun and we walked home around half one and went to bedski! The Singapore Snorer was there again and STILL made the same noise alllll night long except i think worse but maybe im just ebing a drama queen, so i reocrded it on my camera for susie to listen to hehe il put all my videos on FB when i get home it takes too long here!

Sunday 30/05:
All we did sunday was get up and get the bus over to the bus station where susie bought like this chicken spaghetti meal which she had to eat with her fingers coz she didnt have a knife and fork, and we got the bus which was a mini bus :O back to encarnacion and then the colectivo back to the house.

poo.

Monday/Tuesday:
Placeta. Kailtin bought a rugby shirt. i bought playing cards. susie bought An Education. rain. stuck inside so watched An Education. Free concert on the Costanero for independance day. go down. concert cancelled due to rain. it took us asking someone to reaise this. the fact that we couldnt here music and there were people walking away from the concert and the roads werent closed were not a give away apparently. went for drinks and went home. sleep. tuesday lie in then walked down to the centre to see the events of independance day - turns out they were in the morning. epic fail. got ice cream and sat in the square and watched lots of guys with guitars having a jam. internet cafe to upload photos. saw luni baluni in internet cafe but he didnt see me. took two hours to upload everything. went home. concert rescheduled for that night. went down. was late so only caught five songs. all very good songs. it was some old argentinian rock star. went home. sleep.

Wednesday:
Second day at el puma :] was much better than my first and i have lots of jobs to do [feed/water all the birds including a parrot that says HOLA and CIAO and the gammy toucan, feed/water rats, clean all of the above.] i then swept the whole avery room and took the rubbish over to where they burn it all. got home around half one. slept. bummed. went shopping with Vero and Kailtin. bought comfy black stretchy bumming things, eyeliner, mascara, a ring. came home. ate. bed. couldnt sleep.

Thursday:
Third day at El Puma. bit boring. fed and watered everyone. swept up. cleaned the bottom of the toucans cage and it got really freaked out, but i think it forgave me when i took it its fresh food and water, we´re definitely friends again now, or at least as much as two things can be friends when one of you has the other ones poo on you. also got some pig/hog poo on me, and bird poo. its been a very pooey day. then had to sweep a path and collect the twig/leafy things for the Chuchas whatever they are. involved lots of walking back and forth past the ostriches/hogs/a turtle. my view went a bit like this:
ostrich pooing-hog staring at me trying to freak me out-turtle lying there-hog walking towards me- ostrich doing what can only be described as checking its bum i still there-hog going mental when some men cut a tree down- turtle lying there- all hogs standing completely still for no reason- ostrich doing some sort of mating dance at me- one hog trying to have sex with another hog- turtle lying there.. and so on.
I madeabig old pile then did a final sweep of the whole path .. this had so far taken me about an hour and three quarters of sweeping and carrying and two men that work there came over to a]move the big pile id made and b] give me a rake as it might help me. i could have used you an hour and a half ago, but thanks. nobs. im pretty sure all the men there think im a well grumpy bitchbecausea tend to ignore them. i only do that because Norma told me not to be over friendlyandthey always seem to be laughing at me anyway so im taking the speak when spoken to approach. which they find even more funny. when i finished the path there was no one around so i just came home as it was twelve anyway. fell asleep on the bus. got home. had a siesta. went to fruit shop/bakery/supermarket with Kaitlin. in the fruit shop [in spanish] Man: what would you like? Me: STRAWBERRIES Man: oh alright, howmany? a little?? Me: no, loads, i love strawberries *man puts about ten in a bag* Man:is that enough? Me: NO dont be sillly... i like strawberries lots. i need more strawberrries. Man: do you like them with cream? Me: yessss Man: youll get fat you know Me: IM ON HOLIDAYYYYY Man: hahahahahahahahaha heres your strawberries. :] home. eat lots. dinner. ice cream shop. one kilo. woman thinks me and susie are hilarious for buying a kilo of ice cream every week but A] ITS AMAZING and B] its cheapy cheap cheap.

Tomorrow:: Animals- home- paraguay for the weekend [asuncion to be precise.]

Sunday 23/05:
Today we got up about eleven [twelve hours of solid sleep for me, oh yes] and chilled and mooched down to the costanero for lunch in the same restuarant as thursday :] we decided to get a taxi there coz chris has a dodgy ankle and we had SUCH trouble getting one.. they were all full :[ and i ended up embarasingly waving frantically at one that had people in but the driver sort of waved at me as if to wait and stopped on that block to drop the people off, but he took so long we werent sure what was going on so we kept walking and then he came towards us and pulled rightin front of us in the middle of the street and was like i came back for you :D we were so happy and graciasing and we explained that we were going to this restaurant on the constanero but we could remember what it was called so he said he would drive along it and we could just tell him when to stop. and he started asking if we were german etc. and we told him no SILLY we´re english / welsh/ american and he was very excited about that and he pointed out Power and was like muy bien and we were like WE KNOW and he said that his daughter is training to be a chemistry person but works on the ticket booth in power for now :] we got to the restaurant and everyone was in poshish clothes and i was like uh oh im only in flip flops and hot pants but it was FINE and our manager man that had given us the extra wine on thursday seemed ever so happy to see us and said hello how are you etc. and these posh ladies in front of us looked around like how dare they know the manager and theyre not even posh and i was well tempted to poke my tongue out but i resisted :] we sat at the same table and waved at the people that were going past on a ROAD TRAIN [yes thats right] and then we left and walked to get the road train and we met a clown on the way called Luni Baluni [add him on facebook :O] and he made us balloon animal, i got a butterfly, and then asked if we were going to the concert tomorrow which we are, and he was like oh yeah im sure well have a really good time which symbolising that we would be smoking weed i was like LOL a clown that smokes weed hes the coolest person ive ever met haha. then we got the road train and it was soooo cool we waved at aLL the people going past and if they diodnt wave we booed them and then we got a taxi home and know we´re about to go to karaoke again .. YAY :]

Friday 21/05:
In the the afternoon i was still so tired from the night before that i had a 6 hour siesta in preperation for Power that night [we were obliged to go because it was marcelos sons eighteenth birthday] and a new volunteer arrived.. Kailtin Wan from Texas and yes she says y´all and trash and shes really lovely, shell be doing the teaching project with Susie. when i woke up at about eight i got ready quickly because the girls were meant to arrive at nine. Kaitlin arrived around ten after her flight was delayed and the girls still werent there and we persuaded kaitlin even though she ws knackered that she should come out which she did coz shes a total ledgend. eventually. at eleven, Vero and Lau came and were late because lau wasnt gonna come then changed her mind and we sat andplayed cards and went to power about half twelve. we had a REALLY good night because they played so many english songs so it was basically just me elen and kaitlin [susie went to Iguazu] singing to all the argentinaisn coz none of them knew the songs. we rolled home about four am and got an hamberguesa [always] and kaitlin got an hamberguesa sin hamberguesa because shes a vegetarian.

Saturday 22/05:
Me and kaitlin sunbathed and then went for a walk around Posadas, first we walked to the square and i bought a sharpie for people to write on my flag with, and then we walkd to the market with the tin man statue and there were some speeches nearby aboutthe whole independance thing so we stood for a while and tried to understand and we clapped and laughed when everyone else did and we seemed generally accepted. then we looked around the market and then went to california for kaitlin to get some snacks for in the house and i found... dah dah dahh.... CREAM CHEESE :O :O :O ive never been so happy about cheese based goods. so i bought that and crackers and its pretty much been my whole diet since. then we walked home and we went to the fruit shop on the way and kaitlin bought bananas and the fruit shop boy was HOT TO TROT and totally checking out kaitlin, and i was like BASICALLY you should get married and have argentian fruity babies. and she was like i might :]
then we watched iron man and had dinner and i went to bed at ten because i was creammm crackered.

My Number One Fan...

Wednesday 19/05:
I went to the refuge and because it was too cold to go to the poli we just hung around inside and played games like with michala and chantelle i covered there eyes and was like OH MY GOD where are your eyes?? michala?? chantelle? whats happened? yesterday you had eyes. the day before that you had eyes. today you dont have eyes? they thought it ws hilarious haha. Gabi and i also had a bit of a fall out because he was destroying a polystyrene cup and making a big mess so i took it off him and there was a tantrum and he ignored me for about an hour until he got stuck under a bench and culdnt work out how to get himself out without my help so he decided we could be friends after that lol :P

Thursday 20/05:
On thursday i was meant to go to the refuge again because Marcelo had a meeting at the animal place to sort the whole mess out about what happened on monday but i didnt feel very well so i bummed about a bit then in the afternoon me susie and elen went to the placeta to buy various things: a mate cup for tamara,a rugby shirt for me coz they are commmffyyyyyy and the other two bought one aswell, elen bought underwear for the kiddlers, and then we bumped into Julian [nice man that saved me and elen from the death bar men] and we all went for a drink in a restaurant on the costenero and a drink turned into lunch and lunch turned into more drinks and one or twelve games of uno.we all had a jolly good time and i went to ask for more wine and the man was like ohhh nooo we were meant to shut at three and its now five you need to go no more wine im very sorry and i was like aww.. but please? and he was like im sorry so i said it was ok and i went to pee before we left and when i was on my way back to the table he stopped me and was like ..just one more bottle? and i was like YES I LOVE YOU. but after that bottle we really did have to leave so we went home and got ready and went to a dress rehearsal for a play that julian was doing the light for and it was really cool and all the people kpt talking to us and one woman asked us to join the play next time and we were like ohhhh what a shameee we wont be here.. runnnn :O haha. then we went and a got superpancho [stupidly big hotdog] and this man started chatting to us where re you from why are you here etc.etc. and then he told julian to tell me that he was the president of my argentinian fan club and asked if i was MARRIED... LOL i dont think ive ever been so simultaneously embarassed and confused and flattered and tickled at the same time :O then he started getting people to take picures of me with him and i was like woah woah woah im nto getting married in argentina lets adios now and i think he was a bit peeved at me because he got his pancho and left without saying goodbye lol.
we ate our panchos like tramps in the street and ambled over to karaoke and it was so much fun :] everyone gets really into it and it was PACKED and we sung Sweet child o mine and everyone loved it and then this guy behind us sang welcome to the jungle in a proper high pitched voice like its meant to be and it was AWESOME and when he was done i was like yo, dude, song?, muy bien. and he gave me thumbs up and i was like yeah we´re friends now. and then lots of people sung songs in spanish and then we sung Bohemien Rhapsody which me and elen totally did justice air guitar solos and all. we barely even looked at the screens for the words. and then we did hey jude and i only knew the na na na na na na hey jude bit at the end but me and susie rocked that bad boy :] then this girl came over and was chatting to susie asking the usual Qs and then she was like can i have a photo with you? and we were like oh go on then, and then they took loaddsssss us with her friends one with her guy mate who loved me and susie just coz we´re blondish and it was a bit like being famous and extremely funny :] we tottled on home about half four and i took another day off today - i was meant to go to the animals but safe to say im feeling a bit worse for wear what with being illish and hungover :O.
everything at El Puma has been sorted out now basically the guy thats running it had told the others what my jobs were they just couldnt be bothered to tell me so he was annoyed with them and the lady that was well rude to me is rude to everyone so i can just ignore her coz apaz everyone else does :] so what we will call my first officaily day at el puma will be wednesday because its independance weekend in argentina so everyone has monday and tuesday off :]

Animal Sanctuary.

Monday 17/05:

Yesterday was my first day at the El Puma, the animal sanctuary. It couldnt have gone worse really. Norma [Veronicas mum] drove me over there and showed me where and how to get the bus and took me to the office and introduced me to the man that is running it at the moment. The man that usually runs it had a stroke a couple of months ago and hasnt been able to work since and it seems like he was the one that dealt entirely with volunteers and no one thats there now seems to really know what im meant to do or why im there at all. the man thats running it explained what they do there [something to do with machines on the riverside, breed fish and nurse injured animals back to health.] and then drove me to where they keep the animal and showed me them all and basically told me not to touch any of them.. theyve got these hog pig type things, ostriches, these really big birds called chuñas, loads of monkeys, a few of the furry sandwich stealers that theyve got in Iguazu, a few leopards, an owl, some skanky birds, rats and a proper gammy looking toucan. he introduced me as the new volunteer as we walked past people on the way round and no one looked as though they gave a crap, i mean, i wasnt expecting a welcome party or anything but the best i got off any of them was a grunt in my direction.
he then left me with two women who were rubbing power on the skanky birds to get rid of parasites. i basically just stood there for nearly an hour with my arms folded being ignored with nothing to do and not at all feeling like i could ask if theywanted help. one of they ladies did smile at me after a while and the other repeatedly shoved past me and looked at me as if to say why re you even here? she then left änd the nice lady started speaking to me and she got me to wash some water bowls and then fill them up again for the skanky birds and then i fed the rats. after that she told me that because it was raining there werent alot of jobs to do and that on days when its raining i wont have to go. so i left and walked in the direction of the bus stop knowing that i needed to walk down the now very slushy dirt track to the bus stop. i went totally the wrong way and ended up going in a massive circle and ended up back at the animal area. by now it was pouring with rain and i was way grumpy from the rudeness of the people there and i just laughed at my ridiculuus situation, lost in the jungle with no one nice to ask for direction. luckily my sense of direction got me through and i made it to the bus stop and getting the bus home was fine, i have to change at a bus station just outside posadas but luckily there are massive signs saying what buses stop where. i got home at around half one, after having left at half eleven, very grumpy and soaking wet and complained about my day and then went to bed. the thing i was most annoyed about though is that he told me they have 24 workers at El Puma, and that this sint enough, and i was just thinking clearly, as i have stood for an hour doing NOTHING but consider walking off, it is plently of people, and at the refuge where there are sixty children and about 4 or 5 people that help there- all volunteers, they need me a hell of a lot more.

Tuesday 18/05:
i didnt have to go today because it rained heavily during the night and i didnt feel great so i didnt go to the refuge either, so ive just bummed about feeling sorry for myself and dreading my next day at the animal sanctuary and i went to speak to veronica about it, i told her id like to give it another chance and that im willing to blame my bad day/lack of jobs on the rain, and shes going to phone in the morning to ask what my duties are/when my days will finish/what the general deal is. so tomorrow im going to the refuge instead of bumming around and itl be good to see the kids again :]

Hail To The Bus Driver

As i have mentioned a couple of weeks ago, me and elen would normally have the same busdriver each morning to the refuge. As ive changed projects i will no longer be on his bus at twenty past eight each morning, and this makes me sad :[ so ive decided to write him a thankyou letter for entertaining me each morning.

Dear George,

I am aware that your name is not George, but me and elen needed a suitable name to call you that a] looked like you, and b] wasnt spanish so that you wouldnt know we were talking about you, and your lucious floppy hair and ridiucously long eyelashes make you look like a brilliant George. or at the very least, Jorge which is spanish for George. Thankyou for smiling at me with your gappy teeth each morning and for making the move that sealed our friendship- nodding and waving at me and elen when we daydreamed and forgot to get off the bus at our stop, you waited paciently while elen put her flip flops back on and laughed as we waved goodbye. Thankyou for playing eighties classics every morning such as Medolys of Queen, the occasional Final Countdown, and some Pink Floyd, you are a ledgend. Thankyou for finding it funny, and not annoying when me and elen sung along very loudly on your very crowded morning bus to such songs and please thank your friend who thought it was funny too. Thankyou for making the first conversation- where are you from? ahh england. thats far. why arent you wearing any shoes [to elen]? thankyou for always stopping at our stop on the way home even when the button wasnt working, and for letting us cross in front of your bus instead of making us wait. and for laughing hysterically and at the same time looking terrified when we almost got hit from cars coming the other way. dont worry, we wouldnt have blamed you.

Thankyou for just being a general AWESOME busdriver
You have the best decorated bus ive ever seen.
Yours,
Crazy english girl number one. x

Sunday 16/05:

On sunday we had a long lie in after the events of saturday night and then me, Elen and Susie went to La Quarencia for lunch [mainly because it was the only thing reccomended by lonely planets argentina book to do in Posadas] i had a lovellyyyyy steak and chips [i know- what am i playing at right? ive been here a month and only just had steak? how dare i.]and chilled and chatted and elen told the waiter that she liked the little flag pin that he was wearing and he gave me and here little argentina flag badges it was SO cute and then he just went to suzie im sorry i dont have anything for you :O then hurried off haha. but then he came back all ashamed and was like oh-alright have my little flag pin hahaha . he was so cute and i wanted a photo of him but he got really annoyed at us for only having hundred peso notes to pay with so i didnt feel it would be wise to ask.

MY STEAK

After that we went to get ice cream [banana and dulce de leche flavour is the stuff of gods] and played gin rummy and then went to an internet cafe to find out cinema times for that evening as the mall opened at 6pm. I tried to phone home, it was 9pm in the UK on a sunday evening and no one answered. and my first [and admitedly very arrogant] thought was how dare they, the ratbags, not be home when im trying to phone? ive taken the time from my trip to argentina to PHONE ENGLAND to tell them im still alive and they have the CHEEK to now be waiting for my call? now, i see the errors of my ways, obviously i hadnt pre-warned them of my imminent phone call. we had not arranged a time for me to call when they would be home and waiting, i just saw a phone and went for it. so i suppose in hindsight what do i expect? :P anyway it turns out , after investigation through agitated emails, that they had gone out for dinner with friends and i guess without me around for entertainment and only my blog for Beth-Styley-Company they should probably do something to fill their time. so i forgave them :] anyway so we wandered over to the mall and bought tickets to see Shutter Island and went for a little look around the shops and Susie showed us this shop she found the other day called Wanama. its quite jack willsy ish but really cool and i made a massive purchase. I still had nintey pounds left in my im-a-fool-and-didnt-bring-any-warm-clothes-MandP-please-send-me-money fund so i went wild. i found the only waterproof jacket that it both practical and awesome in the land. its AMAZING. and im sorry fellow bargain hunters, i know ive basically blasphemed but its beautiful and as Susie and Elen told me, the cost is divided by how many time youl wear it so itl basically be free after a few years and ive already worn it twice :]

MAC TIME :]

The film was amazing - a bit freaky but i didnt scream or anything like i was expecting to so its all good.

Then we went home and chilled and i prepared for my first day at El Puma, the animal Sanctuary, the next morning.

I Went, I Fell, I Left.

Saturday 15/05:

After a long lie in me, elen, susie, chris and marcelo headed off to me and elens football match. now considering we´d only practiced twice i was feeling pretty optimistic, secretly thinking that i was going to suddenly become a star footballer and score all the goals even though i was on defense and i would be carried off the pitch on people shoulders to crowds of cheering fans. and of course, i would be given a gazillion pound contract to play for argentina.
Basically, the complete opposite happened. we arrived and were given football shirts and i realised the other team had football socks and we didnt and instantly felt like a fraudster. i walked onto the pitch to a few cheers from the boys that are normally at football and i was like yay. im totally gonna be amazing today. i played for about fifteen minutes i think. First, i was running to try and intercept the ball from a scary looking lady and trip over my own foot and fell. luckily not too many people saw, except after a few minutes EVERYONE knew id fallen because i fell in mud and not grass. and the mud is red here so i had a massive red streak down one side of my body and when i rubbed it it just looked like id been tangoed :/. Second, i tried to kick the ball away from our goal and ended up flicking it towards out goal and was literally inches away from scoring an own goal. im so glad it wnt on theother side of the post or i think a] i would have died from embarasment or b] they would have killed me. they definately werent pleased as it was. next thing i knew i looked round and Elen was sitting with susie and chris by the side of the pitch no longer playing :O i was so confused and so didnt want to be the only english girl on the pitch. after a while we swapped sides but i wasnt sure what was going on and was preoccupied with the whole i-think-my-team-mates-might-murder-me thought process and was totally shouted at to get down the other side of the pitch and it was really embarassing so then i was like you know what. i dont care i dont play football in england i dont excersize i can be expected to know the rules or anything or that you change sides of the pitchfor whatever reason so i took my shirt off and gave it to one of the subs and went and sat and all of us volunteers entertained the children that were watching the game playing ¨buenos noches¨ where we would say buenos noches until they pretended to be asleep and then we tickled them all and dancing with them and playing cards and chasing them and generally acting silly so they´d laugh :] after the whole football saga it was a really brilliant day and all the kids were so adorable and they were like are you coming on monday? you have to come on monday. PLEASE COME ON MONDAY.
After football we went home and siestad and went out on night three in a row and the challenge was to stay out until six am :] we went and played pool [me elen susie chris and marcelo] and i was totally amazing but still lost and then around two am we went to power. we saw Vero and Lau in the queue and once we were in we went and sat with her friends Jonathon and Sebastian and just hung and chatted and got drunk and had in depth conversations about home lives and parents and boys and odd stories :] then we went upstairs to dance and we got cocktails coz theyre really cheap [about two pounds fifty] and danced untila bout half five until we went and got an hamberguesa :] rolled home and fell asleep around half six :]

i I l-l-l-like TOAST

Friday 14/05:

This was my last day at the orphanage and i had such a brilliant day. It was Tamaras birthday and we took in a cake and me and elen had decorated and there were banners and balloons and party food and when Tamara arrived everyone cheered and sang happy birthday to her and they had all got her little presents and it was so cute.. :]
i got Tamara to sign my flag [i bought an argentina flag for the people i meet to write on and to stick memorable stuff on ] and loads of the kids signed their names and wrote that theyll miss me and stuff and it was wayyyy cute. We stayed for a bit longer than normal because of the party and then i played outside with the kids for a while and eventually said goodbye :[ Tamara and another lady that works there said thankyou and it ws nice to meet you etc. and i went to say goodbye to the kids and they were all really sweet saying theyll miss me again and Michala got a bit upset that i was going and wouldnt let me say goodbye properly and then ran off and obviously the Gabmeister didnt have a clue i was leaving but i gave him a kiss on the forehead and he gave me one on the cheek and i was like awww. your so cute. Ohhhh and it turns out that Chantelle isnt even Gabis sister?? shes been telling me this WHOLE month that she is his big sister but Paulina the poli office lady was like no her brother is Frederico.. :O but on the upside if i visit again and Gabi is still the most awesome child ever i could just adopt him and not be splitting anyone up lol.
On friday night we [me and elen] went to POWERRR obviously for Tamaras birthday and according to our bet with Marcelo we had to stay out til four and even though i was way tired i managed to stay out til about quarter to five including hamberguesa and getting home :] it was a really funny night because to begin with before tamara got there me and elen were dancing really silly-ly and ¨dancing wide¨ and if song was on in spanish and we wanted to sing along we would say ¨i like toast ¨ along to the beat and it was so much more fun than not singing ..
we also got SO EXCITED because we went into another room just to go to the loo and they were playing Man, i feel like a woman so we danced and sang ridiculously loud and then they played like a virgin and THEN girls just wana have fun. it was epic. we were so loud that we actually had an audience of us just being complete drunken singing maniacs because obviously we were the only ones who understood and knew the lyrics. AMAZING.

Thursday 13/05:

We took the kids to the Parque and generally hung out with them this day :] we only had a smallish group because a lot of the children have colds and arent allowed to go out. a lot of the younger boys no even ask permission before they go and look for mangos which is a lot of progress..
some of the boys came back from mango hunting and they had found needles on the floor and once they realised that we needd to get them off them they thought it was funny and started to run around [injection type needles not sewing needles]in the end i gave them a very stern look and told him that enless he gave me the needle right now we would be going straight to the orphanage and thati would tell tamara. so they both gave me the needles and one had a cap on but one didnt but i was sure they hadnt pricked themselves and i took the needles into a nearby shop and explained that the children i look after found them in the street and can you please put them in your rubbish so that they dont find them again and she said that it was fine and oo i wander what they were used for.. and i was thinking REALLY YOU DONT KNOW??? and the old old old lady that she was serving was like they were used for drugs OBVIOUSLY which i thought was hilarioussss asnd i said thankyou and left and found the boys and told them that it was very dangerous and that if they ever found something like that again not to touch and it to tell a Tia.

At the football the ladies training was muchhh better and the girls were much nicer :] and after while we were watching the boys football a little boy and a little girl whowere both sooo adorable kept looking over and giggling then getting shy and running away and then coming back and then theyboth stood next to where we were sitting and the girl said to the boy i cant do it and giggled and then the boy took something out of her hand and came over to me and smiled and gave me a little sweet and then they both ran away it was the CUTEST thing i have everrrr seen and after that they kept picking flowers and bringing them to us and laughing and smiling and then the boy had to go home and the girl came and sat on the floor about ten metres away from us and Belen [she joined the team] was in the car so we had a spare seat and a told the little girl to sit down and i asked her name but she got all shy and when belen came back they had a little convo and she is just the sweetest kid :]
after that we made friends with some other tiny girls aswell who wanted a hug with us haha.
towards the end we were all playing piggy in themiddle with the boys and running around the the TV people came but only interwieved the man that organised the team and we started taking photos of everyone and when we were about to leave all the older boys were shouting ¨foto con la rubia¨ [photo with the blonde girl] si i was like awwww ok and everyone cheered and i went got in the middle of all the boys for a photo it was soooo funny :P
We went home and had a siesta and the girls came round and we went to mentegato for veros birthday and had a really good night and we had a bet with marcelo that me and elen would stay out til three on thursday night, four on friday night and six on saturday night and we got back at half four on thursday so so far we´re winning :]
it was a really good night and we made friends with some rugby boys then some basketball boys and then an hamberguesa man and his friend :]
i also made new friends in the toilet who heard me speaking english to Vero and they got all excited because they study tourism and have to learn english and wanted to practise on me hehe.
it was a fabby night and was, as is now law, followed by an hamberguesa.

First Football Training ¨Marcelo, NO ME GUSTA¨

Wednesday 12/05:

the refuge was a wee bit dramatic that day. emanuel broke a window and so isnt allowed to come to the Poli anymore. elen brought nail varnish with her though so we painted the girls [and a couple of boys] nails. and chatted with Paulina who is the lady that sits in the Poli Office, and i told her it was my last few days of the refuge project, and she told me that we were friends and that she thought i was really good with the kiddlers and we swapped email addresses and she said that if i ever wanted to visit the refuge again on my travels to email her and i can stay with her and not have to pay i-to-i again :p shes ever such a sweet lady and she was telling me how nice El Puma [the animal sanctuary] is going to be.

After the refuge i had a siesta and went to football training and marcelo was training the women and because hes such a slave driver i think the other girls thought we´d brought him totrain them and didnt take muchof a shine to the weird english girls lol. but we persevered and we had to run for like fifteen minutes then stretch then run again and then play running games with cones and i was DYING because i never excersize and i kept telling marcelo i was gonna tell veronica on him and it was all vey funny. we played a match and i actually TACKLED someone it was amazinnggggg and at one point i did ick the ball in completely the wrong direction and it went off the pitch and i herd lots of groans from the girls on my team but i was like well im proud of me so there :P
at the end marcelo told us that some local TV people were coming on thursday to interveiw us because we are foreigners helping with children or something and was like Beth, your gonna have to translate [he doesnt speak english] and i was like WHATTTTT im gonna make a massive fool of myself.

Happy Birthday Vero x

Tuesday 11/05:

on tuesdywues i had mangoes on monday and was sick did the same again and was sick again. i think / hope that he has learnt his lesson now. i cant remember anything else that happened in particular no doubt it involved mangos.

in the afternoon i went to a english conversation thing at Veronicas mums house like i did a couple of weeks ago where we speak to these old argentinian ladies in english so they know what an english [and welsh] accent sounds like.

In the evening we went to Vero´s house [me, elen, and susie] where she was having a little gathering for her birthday. it was wayyyyy cute and we ate sandwiches and drank coke and chatted with her family [vero translated] and we had this thing called paraguayan soup which is not actually soup but its like cheesey oniony mush stuff and it tastes AMAZING so il be getting the recipe for that and having it as a deffo university staple meal.

after her family meners left we started on the wine and played Chancho and generally laughed lots at her little brother.

A New Friend

as i havent written since monday i have loads to tell you so il do it in seperate posts so as to give your eyes a bit of a break.. arent i nice :]

Monday 10/05:
in the evening me and elen went with christhenewboyvolunteer to chris´s football project. as we have been before i went round and said hello to everyone and generally sat on my deck chair pulling funny faces at some of the younger boys who are all way cute. eventually Marcelo decided that me and elen should be in charge of the little boys and that chris and he were in charge of the olders. so me elen and the littleuns baggsied a goal and started shooting balls. elen and a couple of others were in goal and me and the rest were shooting and it turns out, when a ball is placed in front of me and im on front of the goal and everyone lets me concentrate and i have a little run up i can actually score a goal... HOW AWESOME IS THAT. a couple of the boys were making sure i had my fair shair of kicks so when i hadnt kicked in a while one would shout LA PELOTA PARA ELLA.. the ball for her.. and i was like awww you guyyssssss :] one of the boys kept staring at me and when i tried to talk to him he got all shy so i just smiled and everntually he came over and i asked him his name .. which i couldnt understand, and how old he was .. eight. he asked me how old i was and i said eighteen and he looked very shocked. i think he thought i was fortysomething. the next thing he said to me was possibly the funniest/randomest/cutest thing i have ever heard.. he looked up at me with massive green eyes, motioned for me to lean down so i could here him and said [in spanish] ¨do you have any Karate films on DVD?¨ and i said... ¨no... do you like karate films?¨ and he said ¨yes :]¨ and i said aww im sorry and he said it was ok :] and from then i decided we were friends :] we played a mini match after that and my team totally lost mainly because of me and my fear of footballs.
towards the end of the game a woman came over and spoke to marcelo and he laughed and came over to us.. she has just formed a womens football club that train in the same place and would me and elen like to join? its laughable. in england i am afraid of the ball, dont like football, i make fun of my friend ben when he mentions football at work. but in Posadas, Argentina, where the fact that i´m blonde seems to be the most important thing about me, i am a football coach and a member of an actual team. ITS RIDICULOUS.

Placeta, New People, Power, San Ignacio, Hopscotch.

Thursday 06/05:
On thursday me and elen took Monica and two other girls from the refuge whose names i cant remember to the placeta because we couldnt take them on monday. we knew this time it would be better as weve spoken to these girls lots before and theyre really lovely and funny. :]
we all had a lovely time and they each had fifty pesos as before and it was just like a normal shopping trip and i think the girls really needed it and when i saw them on friday they were really happy !

Friday 07/05:
On friday two new people came to stay with me and elen in the apartment. there´s suzie who i think is 21 and a graduate from nottingham uni and is touring south america for about four months, shes really lovely, her project is teaching english in Posadas. and Chris who i think is also 21 whos a graduate from Bristol and is doing the football coaching project that Ali and Hyunjin did.
later on vero and belen came round and pre drank and played card games and had lots of blue shots. we then pretty tipsily went to play pool which i was AMAZING at. turns out im just better at games when drunk. im better at bowling too. tamara met us there and marcelo came with too and then we all went to power. it ws relly really busy coz it was the DJs birthday and they played more english songs than usual so we were all dancing and i did weird argentinian dancing with everyone including this old guy who clerly thought he had it going on and i was only dancing with him as a joke and then this girl Luz came over and was like HES SO UGLYYYYYYYYY and i was like yeahhhhh i know :P and we all had a jolly good drunken time until me and vero and belen and tamara went to sit outside because we got too hot and by the time we came back elen and suzie and chris had gone [chris was WASTED] and we danced for while then went and got an hamberguesa and it was the best hamberguesa i think ive ever had. including the egg. yep they put egg in hamberguesa .. and ham. and at first i was a bit skeptical but now im totally into it. Marcelo drove us all home around five in the morning and i stumbled in to be told a hilarious story by elen about how chris was so drunk that he took all the sheets off his bed and then wandered around the apartment and then complained because something was wrong with his bed so elen had to tuck him in haha.
On saturday 08/05 we had a lie in and i went to an internet cafe and uploaded all my photos from iguazu and and got realy cross when it kept failing but got them up after six pesos worth of internet.
Sunday 09/05:
on sunday me elen suzie and chris went up to the san ignacio ruins and got lunch [Parrilla - mixed grill and they actually bring you a little grill, its awesome] and then went to the actual ruins bit and had to pay thirty pesos [five pounds] to get in and we walked around this little museum and then went out to see the ruins and they were pretty cool. Veronica had told us that there was a sound and light show after dark so we needed to wait for that so we went to buy some stuff from the little kiosky things and got ice cream and when it got too cold to sit outside [i didnt bring a jacket reasoning that as i was gonna be in the jungle it couldnt possibly be cold... i was wrong] we went and sat inside the museum and we played gin rummy until they told us to get out so we waited outside where we were told we needed to buy new tickets - another thirty pesos - for the sound and light show. at first i was welll annoyed but it was actually SO WORTH IT it was AMAZING

they like projected stuff onto water vapour showing the story of the people who lived in the ruins and there was like this red indian looking man who told the whole story in spanish but we got the gist of it. then we went and had dinner [mozzerella pizza] in a restaraunt in the town while waiting for the bus and we drank beer and played cards and went to get the bus.
we went to where it had dropped us off that afternoon [by now it was nearly ten pm and FREEZING] and a bus pulled up and i asked ¨a posadas¨ and then man said no what you need to do is go down there to the right and your bus will pick you up there. great. so we start walking and see another bus coming that says posadas and we try to flag it down and it drives right by us so we run and run after it and almost miss it but the driver sees us, laughs and lets us on. there werent any seats left so i sat on the floor and listened to music and we everntaully made it back and i went straight to bed.

Monday 10/05:
Today at the refuge was really good we only took around twelve kids with us and they all behaved relatively well. there is still a massive fasciation with mangos and one kid ate so many that he was sick haha. gabi was extra cute today and we all did hopscotch which gabi cant do he just gallops over it and its hilarious.

Gabi with mango :]

can someone please tell my crazy-arse parents not to worry when i dont write on here for a couple of days its only because im too busy having fun and or being drunk and eating hamberguesas. i got an email yesterday asking if i was alive haha.

Amazingly Ungrateful.

So we took five older kids to the placeta yesterday. i think theyre about fifteen. i have never met such rude people in my life! we took Belen and Vero with us to translate and we went and got them from the refuge and got on the bus to town and then walked to the placeta. on the way there the kids were making fun of us and saying that we had no idea where we were going [we had to ask the friendly neighbourhood police officers a couple of times] and just being generally nasty. and i was just thinking, youd think theyd be excited? or happy? its not like people take them out to buy them presents everyday. they just aced like it happened all the time and that they didnt care. when we got there Vero explained that they had fifty pesos each to spend and when they wanted something to tell us and we would pay for it and they were just like oh. can we not go off on our own with the money. AS IF they would probably run away to iguazu or something. so we all went round together and one of the boys picked out a tshirt for thirty pesos. i paid for it and gave it to him and he snatched it off me and walked off. i shouted GRACIAS sarcastically and Vero told him to say thnakyou to me and he looked round, and grumpily said si. gracias. made a face and then walked off. i was like oh great this is gonna be a fun day. because it was taking so long elen and belen went with the girls and me and vero stayed with the two boys. Jona was buying really small things like socks for ten pesos then CDs for five pesos and it was taking FOREVER so we told him to hurry up and eventually he only had ten pesos left and he decided he wanted food with it so i took him to a corner shop and and he wanted some crisps for eight pesos, and that he gets tokeep the spare two pesos. erm. NO. then he said ok. give me the change in sweets and looked at me to say HA. ive won. grrrrr. so we did that and went back to meet the others and vero told Jona off because he bought breakable stuff an eatable stuff and not stuff that he needs i.e a coat. aparently the girls didnt say thankyou either but were less rude than the boys. and i just said to elen: deffo not taking them out for lunch or to the cinema EVER. [they ask us to do that a lot] because they just dont appreciate anything you try to do for them.

today the refuge was pretty normal. kids misbehaving. us getting annoyed. lots of crying but only minor incidents. Gabis getting cuter by the day. running more and he officially speaks :] he says Tia [thats me or elen] Oopa [pick me up] and mumbles lots of other stuff that im sure if i was fluent in spanish i would understand.

most of the time we have the same bus driver, hes got ridiculously lush hair and long eyelashes and if we are daydreaming he waves at us to remind us to get off. and he always plays really good music like Queen and today he threw a bit of pink floyd in there which im suremy parents will appreciate. so today we stood at the front and sang along just to add a little sunshine to his day :]

id also like to say hello to my friend JAMES KINDRED otherwise known as JIMMY BOB KINDER EGG because hes complaining that he never gets mentioned. LOVE YOU JAMES :]

happy nowww??

sorry for the largely boring posts of late. i only really get into silly situations on my own :S

Naughty Kiddlers and Iguazu Falls :]

On thursday we didnt do much except in the evening the girls came round and i made them pancakes because a] im the queen of pancakes and b] theyd never had them before. they went down the treat and i gave them all the recipes and everything.
on friday at the orphanage the children were TERRIBLE. running into theroad to get mangos, fighting, being rude, saying we were mean and hitting us, throwing rocks at windows, throwing rocks at eachother, playing with glass it was hectic. so we told them that on monday [today] we werent taking them out so instead we are taking some of the older kids this afternoon to the placeta, the paraguayan market and giving them fifty pesos each [just under a tenner] to buy something they want.
i think doing something like that is better than taking them out to lunch or the cinema a couple of times because theyll have something to show for it.
at two oclock on saturday morning me and elen took a five hour bus to Puerto iguazu and checked into our hostel and then took another bus to the actual falls. we had to pay eight five pesos [about twelve pounds] to get in coz we´re tourists and then we got a little train to where to falls are. first we did the upper trail where you walk over the top of the falls and see them falling down next to you and then we didnt the lower trail where you see the falls from below and get absolutely soaked, it was absolutly BEAUTIFUL i was so amazed.

then we did a little boat ride which was a hundred pesos [nearly twenty quid] where they take you into the water and go really near the falls and its like being in a riciulously strong power shower and i dont think ive ever been so completely drenched without sitting in a bath. i´d worn my reeboks and as i walked back up the steps from the boat water was coming out the little holes in the top haha. we had lunch at a ridiculously over priced cafe place and there were these racoon things that kept coming over trying to eat peoples food and one jumped onto our table but didnt manage to get my sandwich :P
we sat there for about an hour and a half in the sun trying to dry off and i get some SEXY burn lines and was no longer soaking, just damp, hen we found some grass to lie down on so our bums could get dry, and then at about four we got the little train and the bus back to the hostel and elen had a siesta and i talked to this canadian girl Natalie who is studying in buenos aires. later we all went and got some food across the road and this drunk american guy was like YOUR SPEAKING ENGLISH and came over and told us about how hed met some english people somewhere lese and we were like... how nice? and we sat and ate and drank these really strong drinks called capraihna or something similar theyre the national drink of brazil and i can see why :] they are way tasty and VERY alcoholic. then we went over to the hostel bar because it was happy hour drinks were two for one and we got more of the tasty drinks and talked to some american guys Brad, Brendan and i cant remember the other ones name. and they had to go have dinner in their hotel but we were gonna wait for them to come back so while we did we found a girl who had Roxanne on her ipod and played this game where when it says roxanne half of you drink and when it says red light half of you drink and we all got pretty sloshed. Brendan came back and told us that the other two were so drunk after their dinner that theyd gone to bed so i wrote on his arm to tell the other two they were pansies. i dont remember much after that to be honest but i do know that canadian natalie put me to bed haha. in the morning we got up and checked out and got breakfast and went to this place where you can see paraguay and brazil its quite cool and theres an arts and crafts fair there and i bought some souvenirs. then we went back and got some lunch and canadian natalie found us after shed been to the falls that morning and then we went and sat inside in the hostel because it was really hot. then a guy from last night, Tom the Israli Stuffmuffin came and found us and we were chatting and we went to play ping pong, he has long curly hair and looks like he should be in a shampoo advert and speaks with his thick accent that i found hilarious. he won ping pong and then we sat down and chatted until i had to go get elen so we could go get our bus back to posadas and he was all annoyed because hed been there for a week coz hed been waiting for a package and has seen so many people come and go lol.
on the bus on the way back we paid for semi bed seats but we totally got full on bed seats it was so so comfy and they kept bringing round sweets and biscuits and stuff and playing terrible films and music videos until we eventually got back home :]

good good times

Love,
Bethnal x
